So Eller and Outdoor Systems define Oakland's everyday reality. Outdoor Systems was Gannett until 1995. It seems Gannett wanted to focus on controlling the press, so they sold off their outdoor advertising wing. This picture was taken in 1994, when it was still "Gannett Outdoor." I'm trying to find out if Gannett created Outdoor Systems or if Outdoor Systems was already in existence. The names are changed to protect the guilty? This is in the Laurel neighborhood in Oakland. The residents there finally found a use for USA TODAY! But Gannett is not, repeat not, in the business of outdoor advertising anymore. I just like this picture. |
